Successful movie franchises are gold mines for studios, as evidenced by billion dollar properties such as "The Matrix" and "The Lord of the Rings." And the same holds true for straight-to-video franchises with films that target kids and can be produced for far less than theatrical releases.
The best example of a straight-to-video cash cow is "The Land Before Time." The first film in the dinosaur epic was released in 1987, and since then Universal Studios has produced eight sequels that have sold 60 million units, making it the most successful straight-to-video franchise of all time.
This month, Universal Studios Home Video celebrated the 15th anniversary of "The Land Before Time" with the 10th title in the series "The Great Longneck Migration." The sequel hit stores Dec. 2 and is part of a 15-month "The Land Before Time" promotion that will inelude new box set releases and...
