Americans love to "supersize" everything. Soon enough, Maryland crabs could join that Est with burgers, fries and Cokes.
Dr. Yonathan Zohar, the director for the Center of Marine Biotechnology at the Columbus Center (www.umbi.umd.edu), is thinking big these days - about ways to breed and "genetically engineer" Maryland crabs - indoors.
And Phillips restaurants certainly likes what the 49-year-old, world-renowned scientist has cooking. "The Phillips family did approach us to find a mechanism to work together - to breed blue crabs in captivity," Zohar said during a recent interview.
No agreement has been reached, but the two parties are talking, Zohar said. Partnering on the project could involve Phillips kicking in money for research.
