Jeff Kresnak started in the industry a few decades ago with a broom and a bucket; now he owns his own state-of-the-art asphalt plant at the corner of East Paris Avenue and 68th Street in Gaines Township.
According to a knowledgeable industry insider, his is the first new business in the manufacturing of asphalt to put up a new plant in Michigan in about 20 years.
Kresnak, owner of Superior Asphalt Sealing & Repair, opened his new plant about six weeks ago. It was roughly 14 months ago, though, that he made the decision to go ahead with his dream project. He bought the property and then contacted Gencor Industries Inc. of Orlando, the nation's leading manufacturer of asphalt plants.
"They are a leader in asphalt plants as far as efficiency and air emissions are concerned. They have a super quiet plant and, again, it's very, very efficient on energy usage," said Kresnak.
Superior Asphalt can produce 300 tons of asphalt per hour and store 800 tons of product in four silos with the Gencor plant. Kresnak said that set-up means Superior Asphalt can continue to produce the material while the company's trucks are being loaded with asphalt, which makes the system highly productive."We have kind of a medium-sized asphalt plant. There are plants that produce 500, 600 tons per hour. But for us, it's a perfect sized fit for what we do. We do everything from paving a driveway to paving some of the state highways.
