Like Al Gore trying to drum up interest in taking action on the issue of global warming, Young and Hadaway use the introduction and first chapter of their book to plead their case that we need to prepare for the coming boom of English Language Learners ("ELLs") in America's schools. They quote, for example, a U.S. Census Bureau estimate (2004) that a full 88% of the U.S.'s population increase between 2000 and 2050 will be the children of new immigrants. And with these English language learners included in the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB), it appears that the upcoming educational challenge will be a significant one.
