A Chicago-based operator of high-energy theme nightclubs has signed a lease to occupy the long-vacant site of the former Captain Alexander's Wharf restaurant in Castleton Commercial Park.
The Indianapolis club, to be known as The Tijuana Yacht Club, will be the 13th opened by Heartthrob Enterprises in its nearly three years in business, according to Christen Ryan, director of public relations.
Overlooking a man-made lake, the schooner-like Wharf has been empty for 18 months. Azars Inc., based in Fort Wayne, leased the restaurant location from local developer Howard Peterson and in turn has leased the property to Heartthrob, an Azars' spokesperson said. Terms of the agreement were not revealed.
The 10-year-old restaurant was closed after Azars decided it wasn't profitable. The property attracted widespread interest from people wanting to locate businesses there, sources said, including the former owner of a local nightclub.
Chubby Wadsworth announced last November that he was trying to line up investors for locating a high-tech entertainment/meeting center at the Wharf. His deal never materialized.
