MOUNTAIN VIEW, CALIF. - If Synopsys' proposed acquisition of Avanti goes through, the new company will have to reconcile disparate product flows that include some overlapping technologies. The biggest questions are in placement and routing, where Synopsys has introduced solutions that compete with Avanti's flagship Apollo andwith that product's successor, Astro.
However, there are also complementary strengths. While Synopsys is strong in digital simulation, Avanti has the industryleading Star-HSpice analog/ mixed-signal simulator. Synopsys is the overwhelming market leader in register transfer level (RTL) synthesis, while Avanti brings physical verification to the table with Hercules II and the upcoming Venus product.
For now, Synopsys will not comment about individual products, said Synopsys chief executive officer Aart de Geus. "Our objective is to bring the two teams together and have them debate what the product road map should be,"...
