In Tom Nolle's article {Interoperability Special Report, "Broadband," Comm Week, March 13}, the statement regarding 56-kilobit-per-second connections is only partially true.
It's true that one channel of a T1 is approximately 56 Kbps of bandwidth. But a single T1 channel is not the same as a 56-Kbps digital line, which is known by most as a DDS line. This type of line uses a different framing and transmission method than a T1 line.
So you cannot simply set up that T1 channel service unit/data service unit to a single channel and connect it to a 56-Kbps DDS line. But it would be oh-so-nice for scaling the digital leased-line ladder if you were able to.
