TAIPEI, TAIWAN - Taiwan has struggled to get a major foothold in the exploding multimedia market thus far, but local companies are now pushing some new systems and peripherals in hopes of reversing their fortunes.
Both Acer Inc. and First International Computer (FIC) Inc., Taiwan's two largest PC suppliers, gave separate presentations about their new and future products to a capacity crowd at a multimedia conference here on May 17. Co-sponsored by Electronic Buyers' News and the Taiwan Electrical and Electronic Manufacturers' Association, the conference was entitled "The Multimedia Computer Boom: The Outlook for Components from Taiwan."
A Dataquest Taiwan representative giving a presentation at the conference said the U.S. home PC market grew from 14.7 million units in 1993 to 18.6 million in 1994.
The speakers from Dataquest Taiwan, Acer, and FIC also discussed the move toward highly integrated, multimedia systems that combine several technologies. "Everybody is talking about the convergence...
