Tally Systems has made a name for itself by producing an auditing software to tell companies what software is in use. Now, the Lebanon, N.H. company is helping its IT department customers track what software employees download, with a heavy focus on file-sharing applications.
The company's initial two products, PC Census and NetCensus, allow IT managers to track what software the company's systems use, to ensure licensing compliance and avoid heavy fines. The latest version of the software, TS.Census, has improved recognition capabilities over the earlier two and will allow IT departments to monitor specific software applications.
"We now have the recognition capabilities in our database to determine what software a company's employees are downloading," said Karen Kaliski, vice president of product marketing.
Specifically included in the latest Tally software is the capability to recognize specific file sharing programs like Napster, Gnutella and FileSwap. Napster is an application that gives individuals access to one another's MP3 files by creating a unique file-sharing system via the Internet Napster lets users view and download the contents of MP3 directories from other Napster users' hard drives.
