The East Bay is squarely in the sights of the Target Corp. The Minneapolis-based discount giant has announced plans to open in stores vacated by Montgomery Ward at the Fremont Hub shopping center and Bayfair Mall in San Leandro.
And a new 140,000-square-foot Target store will be built on Whipple Road in Hayward, across Interstate 880 from the Union Landing retail development in Union City, according to prominent East Bay commercial broker Jim McMasters.
Target officials have not detailed their plans yet.
"We are evaluating our remodeling and redevelopment options with (Fremont Hub and Bayfair Mall) and will announce plans for those stores as soon as our analysis is complete," said Target Corp. spokeswoman Kristin Jahnke.
The Fremont and San Leandro sites are two of 35 vacant Wards stores across the nation being bought by Target, Jahnke said. In December, after 128 years in business, Chicago-based Montgomery Ward & Co. declared bankruptcy and shuttered a of its 250 stores in 31 states.
