TELECOMWORLDWIRE-22 March 2001-Telstra selects Nortel Networks' infrastructure for GPRS service (C)1994-2001 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD http://www.m2.com The Australian telecomms services provider Telstra has launched a GPRS wireless Internet and multimedia service for its customers in Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia, Tasmania and the Northern Territory. The new system, which overlays Telstra's GSM network for the provision of high-speed wireless data access, is based on Internet Protocol-enabled core infrastructure from the Canadian telecomms equipment maker Nortel Networks. Telstra uses GPRS to offer peak bit rates of up to 40 kilobits per second to customers, depending on handset capability, and to provide customers with real-time access to information, m-commerce services, entertainment and corporate data.
