San Mateo, Calif. - In the race to provide faster Internet access and better telecommuting capabilities, Terayon Corp. is developing a cable modem that enables two-way data transmission at 10 Mbits/s over hybrid fiber/coax (HFC) cable networks.
Terayon's first products include the TeraPro, a cable modem, and the Teralink 2000, a head-end controller and data multiplexer. The company will be testing the cable modems and head-ends later this year and plans to go into production early in 1997, said Jacob Tanz, vice president of marketing, Santa Clara, Calif.
Tarayon, founded in 1993 by brothers Zaki and Shlomo Rakib, now has more than 60 employees. The company's mission: "To be the leading supplier of advanced systems for high-speed, two-way communications."
Shlomo developed the technology, Synchronous Code Division Multiple Access (S-CDMA), that allows the high-speed data transfer. CDMA is a technology being used in digital cellular phones.
