Tesco is removing the main banks of manned checkouts from a raft of its larger stores in a shift towards self-service tills.
While some manned checkouts will remain open in the stores involved, the supermarket said it had successfully trialled new self-checkouts designed for trolleys.
A "lack of customer demand" for old-style checkouts had enabled the move, it said.
Tesco said the bagging areas in the new trolleyaccessible self-service checkouts were three times as long as those in standard self-service checkouts, allowing up to six bags to be packed at once.
