Timothy's World Coffee has closed all its outlets in the U.S. due to the economic slowdown and the aftermath of the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11. The Toronto-based coffee retailer and wholesaler had 17 locations in New York along with one in Boston and two in Washington, D.C. However, lagging sales and the loss of traffic to stores located in offices near the attack sites, along with job losses, resulted in the decision to pull out of the U.S. retail business, says Lou Fallico, director of sales and marketing at Timothy's. The chain first ventured south of the border about a decade ago. Timothy's will continue to operate its whole-coffee business in the U.S. for offices and restaurants and continue to supply coffee to Continental Airlines.
