Toshiba America Information Systems Inc., Irvine, is stepping up its push into the market for desktop computers.
Late last month, Toshiba rolled out a new line of its Infinia computers featuring built-in DVD-ROM drives - players for next-generation CD-ROMs known as digital versatile discs. The Infinia 7231 is expected to sell for about $2,700 and come with the new universal serial bus for easily connecting peripherals. The computers come with either a MMX Pentium or Intel Corp.'s top of the line Pentium II processor. They also feature a modem with Newport Beach-based Rockwell Semiconductor Systems Inc.'s K56flex chipset.
Toshiba, a pioneer in DVD development, already offers a line of VCR-style players for watching movies on DVD. Now it is one of the first companies to offer computers with built-in drives for DVD, which have a capacity of 4.7 gigabytes per side, or seven times the capacity of an ordinary single-sided CD.
