Torrey Pines Credit Union directors last week approved of a plan to merge with San Diego County Credit Union, the county's fourth-largest such financial institution.
San Diego County's board approved the measure last month, said President Gordon Dames.
"We've been talking about it on and off for the last 90 days," Dames said.
Torrey Pines, ranked No. 15 on the San Diego Business Journal's list of largest credit unions, pursued the merger with San Diego County Credit Union to improve customer services, said Charles E. Wheeler, Torrey Pines president.
"Any credit union our size is a small bank," said Wheeler, whose institution's assets totaled $31.5 million at the end of 1987 and $29 million in 1986. "We couldn't provide VISA cards...
