Temple University is moving ahead with plans to relocate its Tyler School of Art from its home in Elkins Park for nearly 70 years to a site closer to Temple's main campus in North Philadelphia.
The university has considered relocating the art school from its Montgomery County location for several years, and is now taking steps to make that a reality.
The addition of Tyler to the city will increase the number of schools dedicated to art and design to unprecedented levels for Philadelphiaand just about any other major metropolitan area except New York.
The city already boasts The University of the Arts, Moore College of Art & Design, The Art Institute of Philadelphia, The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and others as well as major fine arts departments associated with local universities.
The relocation of the school to a still-undetermined site adjacent to the university's main campus also will help to enhance the development of the Avenue of the Arts North, or North Broad Street.
