HAD ENOUGH: The medical dean at the University of Texas Medical Branch, in Galveston, resigned this month after three masked men attacked her husband and poodle -- possibly in retaliation for her role in recent job cuts.
Valerie M. Parisi, the medical school's first female dean, who also served as the university's chief academic officer, resigned "for personal reasons," effective immediately, according to a university press release. She will continue to serve as an adviser.
Meanwhile, Galveston police continue to investigate the July attack on Dr. Parisi's husband, Gary Strong, who was assaulted by three masked men who jumped out of the bushes of the couple's beachfront home. Mr. Strong was heading out to walk the couple's dog when the men "threw him to the ground and kicked him," according to Rick McCullor, a detective with the Galveston Police Department. When the poodle nipped at the assailants, believed to be men in their early 20s, they beat the dog, breaking its ribs. Mr. Strong was treated for cuts and bruises.
