The University of California at San Francisco is branching out for the first time with a contract to provide surgical services at San Mateo Medical Center.
The effort could lead to more enhanced programs at the county hospital supported by UCSF medical staff
The San Mateo County Board of Super visors last week approved a $1.1 million annual contract with UCSF to provide vascular, general, plastic and thoracic surgery. Hospital officials went to UCSF after they were unable to reach an agreement on a contract with a local physician group to provide surgical services.
"This is a unique opportunity for us in San Mateo," says Dr. Hobart Harris, chief of the division of general surgery at UCSF who worked on the deal with San Mateo.
