Thinking "outside of the box" is a common catch phrase in urban design and planning. But Kip Richardson and Robert Boileau say some of the most fruitful outside-of-the-box thinking has come from working inside the urban growth boundary lines.
"The UGB is restricting the way we've done business before, asking us to do things differently revamp our product," said Boileau, managing principal at Fletcher Farr Ayotte PC.
"For us, this is great. It gives us an opportunity to change the way we've done business for 20 years. For years we were building office parks, and now we're building communities that fly in the face of that."
Fletcher Farr Ayotte, an architecture and urban design firm in Portland, has helped create new communities such as Orenco Station in Hillsboro and now Villebois in Wilsonville, on the site of the Dammasch State Hospital.
