Fast Retailing, which sells casual clothing through Uniqlo shops, has started a grocery business called Skip through its wholly-owned subsidiary FR Foods. The business is starting as a home delivery service for members and also selling from trucks and temporary shops. Customers may also place orders through the Internet. The company plans to open permanent shops by next spring. The products for sale include rice, milk, eggs, juice and about 90 produce items (roughly 60 vegetables and 30 fruits) grown with little chemical input. The products are procured from contracted farmers. Products are tested for chemical residue by an outside agent. The company also discloses the cultivation history of the products over the Internet to convince consumers of their safety. The products are claimed to be safer than regular supermarket products but cost about 20% more. The company estimates first year sales of 1.6 billion yen.
