Reporting increases in market segments across the world, United Airlines parent UAL Corporation (UAL) recorded a $136 million net profit from continuing operations on record first-quarter operating earnings of $293 million. That was an increase of $58 million over the $78 million net profit recorded in the first quarter of 1999. United was the greatest beneficiary by far among the 10 major U.S. airlines of efforts to hedge fuel prices - fuel costs rose only 36.5 percent while the average cost of a gallon of jet fuel rose only 34.2 percent.
