Faced with a landlocked east side Milwaukee campus, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee has begun a long-range student housing plan to determine where the college can grow over the next decade.
Chancellor Carlos Santiago, who joined UWM in early July, said university officials will work with city of Milwaukee officials, state legislators and campus neighbors to develop a plan for student housing. Santiago wants to increase the number of students who live on campus. which university officials estimate is 10 percent of UWM's 27,000 students.
"We want to continue to improve the student experience at UWM," Santiago said in an interview. "We need to look at what our ultimate footprint will be and how we can work within it to create more housing opportunities."
Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett said city officials will work with UWM to determine the best location for the school's future growth.
