Not wasting any time, AST Research, Inc., Advanced Logic Research, Inc. (ALR) and others rushed to follow Intel Corp.'s introduction of 133-MHz Pentium processors last week with new servers based on those chips.
Separately, Compaq Computer Corp. and Digital Equipment Corp. enhanced their server management tools.
The rash of new Pentium-based server announcements, meanwhile, was not unexpected, said Nathan Nuttall, an analyst with consultancy BIS Strategic Decisions in Norwell, Mass. But Nuttall does not expect to see general availability of any 133-MHz machines until the fall.
AST's Manhattan P5133 server, the base model in the company's new product line, will support as many as two processors and feature a Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI) bus.
