Jumping on the Unified Memory Architecture (UMA) bandwagon, Via Technologies Inc., Fremont, Calif., is offering the VP-1 chip set that supports shared frame-buffer memory and main memory. The VP-1 can work with all major manufacturers' graphics chips, according to a company spokesman. The chip set also includes support for other cutting-edge technologies, such as burst extended data out dynamic RAM, synchronous DRAM, and the Universal Serial Bus. The four-device VP-1, priced at $45 in sample quantities, will begin volume production in the first quarter of 1996. Other companies offering or planning to offer UMA chip sets include Opti Inc., Cirrus Logic Inc., and Intel Corp.
