not all of us can jump into the video or event busiit ness and expect to make a living at it immediately; it certainly didn't work that way for me. But I found that augmenting my videography work with retail sales allowed me to reach my business goals. Here are the ins and outs of going full-time retail as I experienced them.
Dateline 1986: I videotaped my first wedding for $50. I had a full-time job in a supermarket at the time, and was excited to make "big" money doing something I enjoyed.
1992: I quit the supermarket job to pursue my dream occupation as a wedding videographer, working out of a converted garage at my home.
1998: I was invited to share downtown office space with a successful photographer whose wedding video I had produced. This resulted in an instant increase in sales.
2002: I bought the audio book Who Moved My Cheese?, by Spencer Johnson, who warns against becoming complacent with whatever your source of "cheese" is, because that could and probably will change. The "cheese" is a metaphor for whatever is important in your life. I became even more aware that my sources for customers could change without warning. In order to stay successful, I would need to increase the demand for my services constantly.
