Reporters, editors, anchors and technicians here are writing a footnote in television history with the country's first nationwide news broadcasts in high definition.
That note is being penned in part by a company based in a nondescript industrial park on the second floor of Cablevision Systems' News12 Long Island building. The name? High Definition News, a new service for subscribers to the Voom direct-broadcast satellite service.
At 3 p.m. Jan. 30, the station began beaming news in 12-minute nuggets throughout the day.
What's different about high-definition news?
Will J. Wright, general manager of High Definition News, said the new technology makes the images and sounds feel more immediate. We're offering a newscast that takes advantage of the new technology and clarity and sound of what's being offered on TV today, he said.
