The 1 percent municipal sales tax is enabling West Virginia cities to improve everything from streets and sidewalks to pension funds for police and firefighters.
The last quarter of 2016 saw $14,040,217.17 in sales taxes collected by 28 cities.
(Revenue figures published by the state Treasurer's Office reflect a 5 percent fee charged by the state tax commissioner for collecting, enforcing and administering the 1 percent tax on behalf of municipalities.)
Charleston collected the most sales tax revenue - $3,613,733.35 - during the last quarter of 2016, and Quinwood collected the least - $2,596.02.
Harpers Ferry collected $21,034.65 in sales tax revenues during the last quarter of 2016.
"I think it's a good thing for the entire community," Harpers Ferry Mayor Wayne Bishop said of the tax.
Bishop said the city has collected over $100,000, which will go for road repairs and sidewalk improvements.
