TORONTO--Water and sewer projects will be among the first work done under the Canada-Ontario infrastructure agreement signed two weeks ago.
The federal government will spend $680 million over six years and the province will spend $1.9 billion over five years under the agreement. The total of more than $2.5 billion will be spent on three initiatives announced in the provincial budget last spring--the Ontario Small Town and Rural initiative (OSTAR), the Millennium Partnerships initiative for larger municipalities, and a Sports, Culture and Tourism initiative.
The first phase of the $600-million OSTAR program was announced in August and applications for the $240 million are due by the end of January.
Detailed criteria for projects under the Sports, Culture and Tourism initiative ($300 million in total) are expected later this month.
