It could have been a lot worse for Weyerhaeuser after the owners of a 370-unit apartment complex near San Jose, Calif., named the Tacoma, Wash.based forest products company in a construction-defect lawsuit, claiming its hardboard siding failed in application. A jury awarded $20.8 million in damages to the owners of Park Place Apartments. Ten weeks later, however, the judge (with help from a "special master" consulting on the intricacies of home building) determined that Weyerhaeuser's share of the damages is only $3.5 million.
