Defining 'continuous ' is easy enough, but anything less than that requires careful consensus
MOST DUTY CYCLE motors run all, or most of, the time. To choose a horsepower rating, we make calculations involving the various actual loads and the corresponding operating times, as well as the measured peak torque.
This practice permits selection of some standard motor having a "continuous" output capability upon which its nameplate horsepower is based.
How long is "continuous"? According to the IEEE Dictionary (Standard No. 100) and NEMA Standard MG1, continuous duty means the rated load can be carried "for an indefinitely long time."
