A period of economic downturn may seem like an odd time to talk about seemingly frivolous motivational schemes. But these schemes are more important than ever and can keep morale from sinking into the abyss. Organisations cannot risk taking a hit in their productivity if employees slip into a demotivated malaise or decide to jump ship.
But while motivation schemes are still vital, the sort of scheme that thrived in the boom times may no longer be suitable. Expensive incentives and prizes such as the Caribbean cruise might be warmly received when times are sunny, but employees may begrudge pricey incentives if the organisation is going through a round of pay cuts or redundancies. Under these circumstances, a simple recognition of success can reap rewards, particularly if employees are worried about their job security.
