Like most technology junkies, I can't resist the attraction of something new. So, despite the fact that I knew I should wait until Microsoft had cleaned up some of the bugs, I ran right out and bought Windows 95 as soon as it was available.
My current system is a custom-built 486-66 with 8 Megabytes of RAM and 1.1 Gigabytes of disk space. It has a Soundblaster card, a Boca video card, a 4X CDRom and a NEC 17-in. monitor. I was previously running DOS 6.22 and Windows 3.11. I was also using the PCTools for Windows desktop instead of Program Manager. Most of my programs are Windows-based, with WordPerfect for Windows 6.1 being my main application. I do occasionally run some big DOS programs for review purposes.
My first step in the installation process was to back up my most important files. I then ran ScanDisk on all of my drives to clean things up. I also used a program called Remove-IT to clean up some old files that were obsolete. Remove-IT has a Win95 Upgrade function that scanned my system, then pronounced itself ready for the upgrade. I also switched from the PCTools desktop to Program Manager.
While I was purchasing Win95, I spotted another program for Windows 95 called Norton Navigator. Since it was an upgrade from PCTools, I thought I'd go ahead and get it, too. That proved to be one of my smarter moves.
