Implementation strategies for balance scorecard success
Numerous organizations have implemented scorecarding systems, with mixed results. Until recently, it was unclear whether there were attributes of an organization that determined how successful a scorecard implementation would be. Nor was it clear whether the method used to implement a scorecard system would have an important effect on the success of the system.
These questions were examined as part of the recently completed scorecarding survey sponsored by CMA Canada, the AICPA, CAM-I, IQPC, Targus Corporation and Hyperion. Over 150 service, manufacturing and governmental organizations, of varying sizes, participated in the survey. Approximately half of the respondents to the survey have adopted scorecarding systems, and their responses to this survey offer us interesting insights into how important implementation methods are in determining scorecard success.

We investigated whether the industry in which an organization is engaged or its size affects scorecarding success. The results indicate that a slight variability in success exists across industries. Firms in the trade sector reported the greatest benefit, followed by governmental entities, service organizations and manufacturing firms. On average, organizations in all sectors agree that their scorecarding system provided significant benefits to their organization.
