Outstanding works by Picasso, Miro, Matisse, Giacometti, Moore, Chagall, Hepworth, Dali, Calder and other famous artists are to be found not just in museums and art galleries, but in the offices of the United Nations all over the world, presented by the Governments of Member States. A World of Art: The United Nations Collection portrays together, for the first time, the many works of art that decorate the United Nations building in New York, UNESCO's headquarters in Paris, the Palais des Nations in Geneva, the Peace Palace in the Hague and other United Nations offices in five continents.
Besides important works by modern artists, the United Nations art treasures also consist of priceless antiquities, such as a perfectly-preserved 2,500-year-old burial mantle from Peru, two second century Roman mosaics from Tunisia and a 700 B.C. statue of Osiris from Egypt.
