Passengers are taking a second, third or even sixth look at Virgin Atlantic Airways' Upper Class Clubhouse, Dulles Airport, Herndon, Va., designed by RTKL Associates
Modesty is not a fault of Virgin Atlantic Airways CEO Richard Branson, whose recent attempts to circumnavigate the world in a hot-air balloon brought him plenty of publicity even if they won him no trophies. (Yes, this is the same British entrepreneur who launched a retail bridal wear shop by dressing as a bride for the ribbon cutting.) Colorful as he is, Branson frequently carves out interesting niches even in hotly contested industries with such ventures as Virgin Megastore in retail music, Virgin Cola in soft drinks, and of course, Virgin Atlantic Airways in air travel. In typical Branson fashion, his airline is promoting its fifth daily flight from New York to London with screen actor Mike Myers portraying a leering Austin Powers who proclaims, "Five times a day? Yeah, baby!" even as it pampers passengers with trendy facilities like the Upper Class Clubhouse at Washington Dulles International Airport, Herndon, Va., designed by RTKL Associates.
