York City-based American Conceptual Artist Dennis Oppheim has been a key figure in several major art movements since the 1960s and 1970s. Chief among his artistic contributions was a rejectini of conventional gallery space and decision to locate his works in urban or rural landscapes. He received a bachelor's degree in fine arts in 1965 from the School of Arts and Crafts in Oakland, Calif., and a master's degree in fine art from Stanford University in Palo Alto, Calif.
Dennis Oppenheim chose the Dock Street site on the Yonkers waterfront for his project "because it is very close to the water and because I thought that this was a perfect site for something conceptually related to a lighthouse."
His fascination with the form and location of lighthouses was the inspiration for his design.
