Husband-and-wife corporate officers of the McKinney Bedding Company, Jane McKinney and Lloyd McKinney, saw their company reap substantial benefits from the Springfield enterprise zone program over the past six or seven years--mostly through the persistence of Jane McKinney and he know-how of CPA Tom Everett.
The McKinney Company manufactures mattresses and boxsprings at 718 W. Chase.
"We've been in this location for 40 years or so," Jane McKinney said, "before there was such a thing as an enterprise zone." The company was in the process of building an addition to its plant when the McKinneys discovered the program in 1987.
"We were adding 25,000 square feet onto our building at that time," McKinney said. "Bill White (Springfield Better Homes), a business neighbor on Chase Street, told us about the enterprise zone program. He had just moved into the building next to us, and I think when he was looking for a place to move, his Realtor put him on the trade of the enterprise deal."
