When Tom [the fictitious name] woke up dazed, he was naked in someone else's apartment and with a man trying to sexually abuse him. The 18-year-old rugby player, confused and disoriented, managed to push his attacker, hit him in the head and escape. After graduating in 2011, Rey began a PhD in Geography at the University of Leeds with a thesis entitled: "Sexuality and transnationalism in the day to day. Bisexual and gay men from Southeast Asia in Manchester." It was cancelled after his arrest in June 2017.
During his decade in the English city, Rey continued to behave as a devout Catholic and ran a liberal Anglican church in Rusholme, near his home, in which he befriended other older gays he called "his gay parents."
